First America Buyer Map
Melvie | First America | October 2026
As of 13 Oct 2026
First America recycles electronics, metals, solar equipment and batteries, and runs secure data destruction, parts harvesting, resale and logistics for the organizations that retire them.
This map lays out the groups of organizations those buyers sit in, how large each group is where a clean public count exists, and who usually signs off inside each one.
The groups follow the industries First America names on its own site, led by the new energy work: solar, battery storage and electric vehicles.
Where the buyers sit
Counts are firms, not sites, and are banded on purpose. A group with no clean public count says so rather than showing a number.
| Group | Organizations in the US | Under 20 staff | 20 to 99 | 100 to 499 | 500 or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar power plant owners and operators | about 530 | not published | not published | not published | not published |
| Battery and battery pack manufacturers | about 240 | not published | not published | not published | not published |
| EV makers, auto dealers and fleet operators retiring EV parts and packs | no clean public count | ||||
| Data center, hosting and IT infrastructure operators | about 11,000 | about 8,900 | about 1,300 | about 650 | about 570 |
| Electronics and electrical equipment manufacturers | about 9,700 | about 6,200 | about 2,200 | about 780 | about 510 |
| Hospitals and health systems | about 3,100 | about 360 | about 250 | about 1,200 | about 1,300 |
US firm counts by industry code, banded deliberately.
Who usually signs off, by group
Titles vary by organization size. In smaller firms one owner or general manager holds most of these seats.
| Group | Who usually signs off | Who also weighs in |
|---|---|---|
| Solar plant owners and operators | VP of asset management or VP of operations at the owner | Operations and maintenance managers, EHS, procurement |
| Battery manufacturers | Plant manager or VP of operations, with the CFO on larger programs | EHS and sustainability leads, quality, supply chain |
| EV makers, dealers and fleets | Director of fleet operations, or the service and warranty operations lead at a maker or dealer group | EHS, reverse logistics, the dealer principal at a single store |
| Data center and IT operators | Director of data center operations or the IT asset manager | Information security lead, procurement, finance |
| Electronics manufacturers | Plant manager or VP of operations | Quality, EHS, procurement, the IP or legal lead for prototypes and rejects |
| Hospitals and health systems | CIO or director of IT for retired devices, with the privacy officer | Supply chain, biomedical engineering, environmental services |
What each group is weighing
| Group | What moves the decision |
|---|---|
| Solar plant owners and operators | Panels and inverters retired early by upgrades or damage, and whether reusable equipment can be resold instead of scrapped |
| Battery manufacturers | Safe handling and transport of off-spec cells and packs, state disposal rules, and the value of lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper |
| EV makers, dealers and fleets | Battery safety in storage and transport, vehicle and driver data left on onboard computers, and pickups across many sites |
| Data center and IT operators | Data on retired drives and servers, refresh cycles that never stop, and recovering value before equipment is scrapped too early |
| Electronics manufacturers | Rejects, recalls and prototypes that must be destroyed to protect the brand, plus scrap streams that clutter the floor |
| Hospitals and health systems | Patient data on retired devices, privacy rules, and records that hold up in an audit |
How the decision usually runs
In most of these groups an operating lead raises the need when retired equipment piles up or a project ends, and finance or procurement approves the vendor once the safety record, the paperwork and the recovered value are clear.
Where data sits on the equipment, the security or privacy lead holds a veto. Government offices and schools, which First America also serves, run the same choice through a procurement officer and a formal award.
